Origins: When 50 eminent women jurists from around the world joined the National Association of Women Judges (NAWJ) at its 10th Annual Meeting win Washington, D.C. in 1989, the judges discovered a common need to support each others’ efforts in order to promote the rights and interests of women world wide. The alliance expanded from an International Outreach Committee in the NAWJ into a new global organization – The International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ).

The IAWJ was formally launched in October 1991 when women judges in 15 national ratifies its Constitution and Bylaws. In October 1992, 82 women judges representing 43 nations attended the IAWJ inaugural meeting in San Diego, California. A year later, the International Women Judges Foundation, a tax-exempt, nonprofit institution, was incorporated to carry out the IAWJ’s educational and public service activities. As of 1996, the IAWJ has more than 3,500 members in 56 countries.

Objectives

· Encourage the formation and growth of women judges’ associations worldwide so that collectively they may serve the interests of their members and increase the effectiveness of the judiciary through education, training and other support programs.

· Promote and coordinate actions among women judges globally so that they may effectively address the critical legal and judicial problems which impede true equality for all people.

· Facilitate the exchange of information and research on legal issues of special concern to women through all forms of communication.

· Increase the number of women judges at all levels of the judiciary, particularly appellate and constitutional courts where they currently are underrepresented, so that women participate equally in the development of the law and ensure that all legal-judicial systems promote the rights and interests of women.

· Minimize gender bias in judicial systems through study, development of educational materials and training provisions for men and women judges.
