Introduction
These pages contain contacts for women lawyer organisations in Australia and national groups in other countries. This is the only detailed listing of practicing women lawyers groups on the internet and we have only scratched the surface. Where we do not yet have a national group contact, other women lawyers groups are listed. If you know of groups which are not listed or of home page or email contacts please let us know. Email nwjc@nwjc.org.au
The compilation of this list was undertaken in
early 1996 by the
National Womens
Justice Coalition as a gift to Australian Women Lawyers (born February 1996). AWL is the first national peak body for women
lawyers in Australia. We thank women lawyers and others from
around the world who responded when we asked for contacts
through various international email lists.

email: iwjf@aol.comOrigins: When 50 eminent women jurists from around the world joined the National Association of Women Judges (NAWJ) at its 10th Annual Meeting win Washington, D.C. in 1989, the judges discovered a common need to support each others efforts in order to promote the rights and interests of women world wide. The alliance expanded from an International Outreach Committee in the NAWJ into a new global organization The International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ).
The IAWJ was formally launched in October 1991 when women judges in 15 national ratifies its Constitution and Bylaws. In October 1992, 82 women judges representing 43 nations attended the IAWJ inaugural meeting in San Diego, California. A year later, the International Women Judges Foundation, a tax-exempt, nonprofit institution, was incorporated to carry out the IAWJs educational and public service activities. As of 1996, the IAWJ has more than 3,500 members in 56 countries. Objectives
· Encourage the formation and growth of women judges associations worldwide so that collectively they may serve the interests of their members and increase the effectiveness of the judiciary through education, training and other support programs. · Promote and coordinate actions among women judges globally so that they may effectively address the critical legal and judicial problems which impede true equality for all people.· Facilitate the exchange of information and research on legal issues of special concern to women through all forms of communication.
· Increase the number of women judges at all levels of the judiciary, particularly appellate and constitutional courts where they currently are underrepresented, so that women participate equally in the development of the law and ensure that all legal-judicial systems promote the rights and interests of women.
· Minimize gender bias in judicial systems through study, development of educational materials and training provisions for men and women judges.
Achieving Our Goals The International Association of Women Judges and the International Women Judges Foundation, its nonprofit adjunct:
* Produce a biannual newsletter in English and Spanish as a major vehicle of information sharing.
* Develop and cosponsor international and regional conferences which focus on critical legal and judicial issues of special importance to women.
* Promote visits among judges of different countries to foster the exchange of information and experience.
* Encourage ratification of and monitor compliance with the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women
* Update an annual membership directory and maintain a computerized list of women judges worldwide.
* Respond to grave threats to women judges physical and mental well-being through letters protesting their treatment
IAWJ Membership & Contacts
Voting membership in the IAWJ is open both to individual judges and women judges associations, upon ratification of its Constitution and payment of dues. Nonvoting membership is open to retured judges and all others who support LAWJs and the IWJFs goals.
An International Director is selected by the IAWJ members in each nation or region. The International Director serves on the International Board of Directors, the IAWJs policy-making body, and serves as a liaison between the IAWJ and members of the respective nation or region. An Executive Council, composed of the Associations officers, proposes policies and action to the Board of Directors and implements its decisions. The Board meets biennially.
